Party Menus - Mexican/ Latin American - New World
The New World was ‘discovered’ by Christopher Columbus on his first journey in 1492 in search of a route to India and China for spices and gold. Until then the (Old) world consisted of the landmass from the European Atlantic to China and Japan. Infact Columbus made three subsequent journeys, but never found spices, nor indeed America. He did not know the American continent was in his path; it was Amerigo, years later who, as the first Spaniard to land there, gave his name to the continent. Ingredients found in the New World included chocolate, avocado, maize, turkey, tobacco, potato, tomato, vanilla, allspice, kidney beans, string beans and above all, chillies (capsicum peppers). Subsequent Spanish conquisatadors destroyed the Inca and Aztec civilisations. Fortunately some recipes survived, and we present some of them here, using New World ingredients and spicing.
