Sophie Grigson was so moved by the Kosovo crisis of 1999 that she decided to do something to help the refugees. As a well-known food writer and television personality, she decided that her skills could be employed to good effect if she were to compile a cookbook. She contacted over 50 other celebrity chefs, including Ken Hom, Delia Smith, Anton Mosimann, Jane Asher, Ainsley Harriott, Gary Rhodes, Nigel Slater, Josceline Dimbleby, Mary Berry, Antonio Carluccio, Lesley Waters, Claudia Roden and Pat Chapman. Says Pat "it was great to get a personal phone call from Sophie, a TV cook and food writer I've always admired. She said please drop everything and send me your recipe today! The book is coming out eight weeks from today".
I did and it did!
Cooks for Kosovo was born. 65 recipes are in this book ranging from Soups and Starters to Main Courses and Deserts, many of them are accompanied by mouth-watering photographs. The recipes are diverse and don't come from any one perspective or origin; there are plenty of vegetarian dishes as well as meals with fish and meat: Raymond Blanc suggests a delicious "Curried Cream of Cauliflower Soup with Coriander Puree"; Antony Worrall Thompson gives us "Thai Green Chicken Curry"; there's "Grilled Swordfish with Green Lentil Salad" from Ainsley Harriott and "Banana Tarts" courtesy of Nigel Slater. But the most important thing about this book is that one pound from every copy that's sold will go to the Kosovo Crisis Appeal. --Carina Trimingham
All authors donated their recipes free of charge allowing £1.00 from every copy of the book sold to go towards the Kosovan Crisis Appeal raising over £50,000.
