Beginning in the late nineteenth century, a spate of cookbooks and household management guides appeared that were intended to assist the British women in running their households in India.

Many British women in India adopted a 'hands'off' approach to housekeeping that allowed them to devote their attentions to other pursuits, including the work of the empire.

Pat's grandmother was a "hands-on" person and given the first edition of this book in 1902 on the occasion of her wedding in Agrah. It contains many Anglo Indian recipes and other fascinating insights into life in the British Raj.
The book says of itself: "A practical Handbook to the Kitchen in India, containing original and approved recipes in every department of Indian Cookery; recipes for summer beverages and home-made liqueurs; medicinal and other recipes Together with a variety of things worth knowing".

This book was one of the Raj memsahib's most cherished bibles, it was their day-to-day handbook and instruction manual.

It's as compelling today and an essential collector's book for the Indophile and currholic bookworm.

One in stock: Seventh (1948) Edition. Paperback. Condition:Paper wraps a little wrinkled and stained (lh corner slightly worse than pic shows but tolerable in a book this old.
